1. Treat steering position as the first gate
Choose a factory-built left-hand-drive specification for the proposed order. Nigeria’s National Road Traffic Regulations prohibit importing vehicles with steering apparatus on the right. That rule does not approve every LHD vehicle: category, safety equipment, conformity, customs clearance and registration remain separate questions. Obtain the exact model code, VIN or proposed VIN list, production date, seating capacity and gross weight. Do not rely on a brochure name shared by several different versions.
2. Separate new and used eligibility
A July 2026 official notice announces revisions to Nigeria’s import-prohibition list and tariff framework. The revised prohibition list could not be verified in full for this guide, so no current used-vehicle age cutoff is stated here. Have the importer obtain written Customs or licensed-broker confirmation for the exact tariff category, manufacturing date and planned shipment before buying used stock. Do not rely on age limits repeated in older online summaries. New condition does not remove conformity or registration obligations.
3. Confirm the applicable conformity process
SON describes pre-shipment SONCAP certification for regulated imports and separately lists the SON–NADDC Vehicle Conformity Assessment Programme. Ask SON or an approved assessment provider which route applies to the exact new or used vehicle and shipment date, what tests and certificates are needed, and whether any exemption is valid. SON’s published used-product exemption expressly excludes automobiles. A seller’s Chinese certificate or an informal promise of clearance is not evidence of Nigerian approval.
4. Agree the document workflow before loading
CBN’s published import guidelines place e-Form M through an authorised dealer bank at the start of the import process. Have the Nigerian importer and bank confirm the current workflow and documentary requirements before shipment. SON’s 2026 notice routes import permits and certificate activation to the National Single Window, while accredited partners continue issuing certificates on the SON Portal. Agree a shipment checklist covering the commercial invoice, VIN-matched vehicle schedule, transport document, insurance evidence and required conformity/clearance records. Identify who obtains each document and who corrects discrepancies.
5. Budget beyond the vehicle invoice
Ask a licensed local broker for a dated landed-cost calculation using the exact tariff classification and Customs valuation basis. Include applicable duties and levies, port charges, examination, storage, inland transport and registration. The 2026 fiscal amendments make recycled online tax percentages particularly unsafe. Keep payment evidence and customs records: the road-traffic regulations require evidence of import-duty payment or exemption for registration of an imported vehicle. A low purchase invoice alone does not settle Customs value.
6. Match an EV to a real charging plan
Before choosing battery size, obtain photographs and manufacturer specifications for the actual AC and DC inlets, charging protocols, voltage/current limits and onboard charger. IEC publishes different AC and DC interface standards; an EV label alone establishes no compatibility. Our practical recommendation is to have the buyer’s installer verify the intended depot supply, earthing, protection and charger, then test the proposed vehicle/charger combination. Confirm whether DC charging is fitted, rather than assuming all trims support it.
7. Get battery-shipping acceptance in writing
The IMDG Code 2024 edition, including Amendment 42-24, became mandatory on 1 January 2026. Its amendments introduce distinct entries for battery-powered vehicles. Ask the dangerous-goods specialist and carrier to confirm classification, documents, battery condition, state-of-charge limits and the chosen container or ro-ro service. Request the relevant battery test summary and identification. Do not declare a complete EV as an ordinary car, assume a loose spare battery follows the vehicle’s rules, or apply airfreight limits automatically to sea transport.
8. Define acceptance and support
As a purchasing safeguard, put the exact specification, inspection criteria, document handover, shipping term, payment milestones and remedy for rejected documents into the contract. Agree parts availability, diagnostic access, software language and who pays for repairs. Confirm any warranty’s issuer, territory and exclusions; this guide promises no manufacturer warranty or local support network. Release an order only when both the vehicle and its documentary route have been checked.
Buyer questions
Does LHD guarantee clearance?
No. Steering layout is one condition. Conformity, age/category eligibility, customs and registration must also be satisfied.
Is a used EV exempt because it has no exhaust?
Do not assume so. Obtain a classification-specific answer on used-vehicle eligibility and conformity before paying.
Does this page mean Nigeria delivery is available?
No. It is market research. Availability, exporter, importer, route and contract must be confirmed for each enquiry.
Scope and date of this guide
This is an editorial B2B buying guide, not confirmed Nigeria service coverage or import approval. wulingautoexport.com is operated by 河南麦场科技有限公司 as an independent trader and sourcing/export coordinator, not a vehicle manufacturer. Confirm the contracting seller, exporter, importer of record and responsibilities in writing for each proposed transaction. Factory-supplied vehicles are sourced through vehicle-trader channels. Manufacturer quality-inspection reports can be requested; they do not replace independent inspection or destination approval. The importer must verify local compliance.
